The Institute for Healthy Families believes an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. Counseling for children, youth, and adolescents is focused on early intervention with a family systems approach. We believe that children and youth benefit when they experience strong attachments with parents, families, schools, places of worship, and healthy communities. Unfortunately, our religious families and communities often place a high value on good behavior, rather than helping children learn how to process their emotions in a healthy way. Our philosophy on counseling youth includes developing and maintaining strong parent and family attachments, healthy and open communication, and an understanding of how emotions and feelings impact our lives and help us adjust to life’s many changes.
Adolescence is a critical time in human development where young people are establishing an identity and figuring out who they are. It's an exciting time of growth, but is also full of crisis and drama! During adolescence, the brain's pre-frontal cortex is still developing, and because of this, youth are more prone to risk-taking and other potentially harmful behaviors. While taking risks is a part of growing up, it's important for teens to have good mentors, teachers, and counselors to help guide them. Our approach in counseling adolescents combines the latest scientific research on risk avoidance while helping youth to navigate autonomy and maintain their faith values.
